    Fairness-enhancing interventions in stream classification

    The wide spread usage of automated data-driven decision support systems has raised a lot of concerns regarding accountability and fairness of the employed models in the absence of human supervision. Existing fairness-aware approaches tackle fairness as a batch learning problem and aim at learning a fair model which can then be applied to future instances of the problem. In many applications, however, the data comes sequentially and its characteristics might evolve with time. In such a setting, it is counter-intuitive to "fix" a (fair) model over the data stream as changes in the data might incur changes in the underlying model therefore, affecting its fairness. In this work, we propose fairness-enhancing interventions that modify the input data so that the outcome of any stream classifier applied to that data will be fair. Experiments on real and synthetic data show that our approach achieves good predictive performance and low discrimination scores over the course of the stream.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures.     Resource Wars and Conflict Ivory: The Impact of Civil Conflict on Elephants in the Democratic Republic of Congo - The Case of the Okapi Reserve

    Human conflict generally has substantial negative impacts on wildlife and conservation. The recent civil war (1995-2006) in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) resulted in a significant loss of wildlife, including elephants, due to institutional collapse, lawlessness and unbridled exploitation of natural resources such as minerals, wood, ivory and bushmeat. We used data from distance sampling surveys conducted before and after the war in a protected forest, the Okapi Faunal Reserve, to document changes in elephant abundance and distribution. We employed Generalized Additive Models to relate changes in elephant distribution to human and environmental factors. Populations declined by nearly fifty percent coinciding with a major increase in elephant poaching as indicated by reports of ivory trade during the war. Our results suggest that humans influenced elephant distribution far more than habitat, both before and after the war, but post-war models explained more of the variation. Elephant abundance declined more, closer to the park boundary and to areas of intense human activity. After the war, elephant densities were relatively higher in the centre of the park where they were better protected, suggesting that this area may have acted as a refuge. In other sites in Eastern DRC, where no protection was provided, elephants were even more decimated. Post-war dynamics, such as weakened institutions, human movements and availability of weapons, continue to affect elephants. Survival of remaining populations and recovery will be determined by these persistent factors and by new threats associated with growing human populations and exploitation of natural resources. Prioritizing wildlife protection, curbing illegal trade in ivory and bushmeat, and strengthening national institutions and organizations in charge of conservation will be crucial to counter these threats

    Ferritic Nb-alloyed Cr-Steel in simulated strip casting process

    Nb alloyed ferritic Cr-steel is usually produced by continuous casting with following hot and cold rolling procedure. In the laboratory scale the possible new route via strip casting was studied. The scope of the investigation in simulated process route was the development of microstructure and precipitations. In the experiments process parameters similar to those of the real strip caster were chosen, then those of hot rolling and cold rolling of such cast strips. The quickly solidified layer was produced by immersion of a steel substrate under vacuum into melt. The microstructure showed small niobium precipitates in the grain matrix and at the grain boundaries. Their size and distribution was evaluated for different niobium contents and cooling rates in the as-solidified structure. The diffusion controlled change of the precipitate morphology was also analysed after preheating and rolling. Reprecipitation and precipitate growth, as well as dissolution of precipitations at the grain boundaries were observed. The effect of various cooling rates and niobium content on the shape and formation of niobium containing precipitates and on the grain boundary is discussed. Thermodynamic calculations using FactSage were carried out in order to predict the precipitation of Nb-rich phases in ferritic stainless steels.     Identification of Arabidopsis thaliana phloem RNAs provides a search criterion for phloem-based transcripts hidden in complex data sets of micro array experiments

    Phloem-mobile signals play a major role in plant nutrition, development and communication. In the latter context, phloem-mobile RNAs have been associated with signalling between plant tissues. In this study, we focused on the identification of transcripts in the shoot phloem of the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. To isolate transcripts expressed in phloem parenchyma cells and in companion cell–sieve element complexes, we used laser microdissection coupled to laser pressure catapulting (LMPC). Mobile transcripts in sieve elements were isolated from leaf phloem exudates. After optimization of sampling and fixation, RNA of high quality was isolated from both sources. The modifications to the RNA amplification procedure described here were well suited to production of RNA of sufficient yield and quality for microarray experiments. Microarrays hybridized with LMPC-derived phloem tissue or phloem sap RNA allowed differentiation between phloem-expressed and mobile transcript species. Using this set of phloem transcripts and comparing them with microarrays derived from databases of light, hormone and nutrient treatment experiments, we identified phloem-derived RNAs as mobile, potential long-distance signals. Our dataset thus provides a search criterion for phloem-based signals hidden in the complex datasets of microarray experiments. The availability of these comprehensive phloem transcript profiles will facilitate reverse-genetic studies and forward-genetic screens for phloem and longdistance RNA signalling mutants

    Circulating cardiac troponin T exhibits a diurnal rhythm

    Objectives The goal of this study was to test the unverified assumption that chronically elevated cardiac troponin T (cTnT) levels fluctuate randomly around a homeostatic set point. Background The introduction of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin (cTn) assays has improved sensitivity for acute myocardial infarction (AMI). However, many patients with a single positive cTn test result do not have AMI. Therefore, the diagnosis of AMI relies strongly on serial testing and interpretation of cTn kinetics. Essential in this regard is a profound understanding of the biological variation of cTn. Methods Two studies were conducted to assess biological cTnT variation and to investigate the presence of a diurnal rhythm of cTnT. Study 1 comprised 23 male subjects with type 2 diabetes, with no acute cardiovascular disease. Serial venous blood samples were drawn over an 11-h period (8:30 AM to 7:30 PM). In study 2, the presence of a diurnal cTnT rhythm was investigated by hourly sampling of 7 subjects from study 1 over 25 h. Results In study 1, we observed a gradual decrease in cTnT concentrations during the day (24 2%). This decrease was present in all participants and was most prominent in subjects with the highest baseline cTnT values (Pearson’s R 0.93). Diurnal variation of cTnT, as assessed in study 2, was characterized by peak concentrations during morning hours (8:30 AM, 17.1 2.9 ng/l), gradually decreasing values during daytime (8:30 PM, 11.9 1.6 ng/l), and rising concentrations during nighttime (8:30 AM the next day, 16.9 2.8 ng/l). Conclusions A diurnal cTnT rhythm substantiates the recommendation that all dynamic changes in cTnT should be interpreted in relation to the clinical presentation. Epidemiological studies and risk-stratification protocols with the use of cTnT may benefit from standardized sampling times.     Prognostic value of basal high-sensitive cardiac troponin levels on mortality in the general population

    Interest in the use of cardiac troponin T (cTnT) and cardiac troponin I (cTnI) has expanded from diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction to risk assessment for morbidity and mortality. Although cTnT and cTnI were shown to have equivalent diagnostic performance in the setting of suspected acute myocardial infarction, potential prognostic differences are largely unexplored. The aim of this study is to quantify and compare the relationship between cTnT and cTnI, and cardiovascular and all-cause mortality in the general population. Medline, Embase, and the Cochrane Library (from inception through October 2016) were searched for prospective observational cohort studies reporting on the prognostic value of basal high-sensitive cTnT and/or cTnI levels on cardiovascular and all-cause mortality in the general population. Data on study characteristics, participants' characteristics, outcome parameters, and quality [according to the Effective Public Health Practice Project (EPHPP) "Quality Assessment Tool For Quantitative Studies] were retrieved. Hazard ratios per standard deviation increase in basal cardiac troponin level (HR per 1-SD; retrieved from the included articles or estimated) were pooled using a random-effects model. On a total of 2585 reviewed citations, 11 studies, with data on 65,019 participants, were included in the meta-analysis. Random effects pooling showed significant associations between basal cardiac troponin levels and HR for cardiovascular and all-cause mortality [HR per 1-SD 1.29 (95% confidence interval, 95% CI, 1.20-1.38) and HR per 1-SD 1.18 (95% CI, 1.11-1.26), respectively]. Stratified analyses showed higher HRs for cTnT than cTnI [cardiovascular mortality: cTnT HR per 1-SD 1.37 (95% CI, 1.23-1.52); and cTnI HR per 1-SD 1.21 (95% CI, 1.16-1.26); all-cause mortality: cTnT HR per 1-SD 1.31 (955 CI, 1.13-1.53); and cTnI HR per 1-SD 1.14 (95% CI, 1.06-1.22)]. These differences were significant (P < 0.01) in meta-regression analyses for cardiovascular mortality but did not reach statistical significance for all-cause mortality. Elevated, basal cTnT, and cTnI show robust associations with an increased risk of cardiovascular and all-cause mortality during follow-up in the general population

    Streptomyces tardus sp. nov.: A Slow-Growing Actinobacterium Producing Candicidin, Isolated From Sediments of the Trondheim Fjord

    Marine environments are home to an extensive number of microorganisms, many of which remain unexplored for taxonomic novelty and functional capabilities. In this study, a slow-growing Streptomyces strain expressing unique genomic and phenotypic characteristics, P38-E01T , was described using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. This strain is part of a collection of over 8,000 marine Actinobacteria isolates collected in the Trondheim fjord of Norway by SINTEF Industry (Trondheim, Norway) and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU, Trondheim, Norway). Strain P38-E01T was isolated from the sediments of the Trondheim fjord, and phylogenetic analyses affiliated this strain with the genus Streptomyces, but it was not closely affiliated with other described species. The closest related type strains were Streptomyces daliensis YIM 31724T (98.6%), Streptomyces rimosus subsp. rimosus ATCC 10970T (98.4%), and Streptomyces sclerotialus NRRL ISP-5269T (98.3%). Predominant fatty acids were C16V0 iso, C16V0, and Summed Feature 3, and the predominant respiratory quinones were MK-10(H6), MK-10(H4), and MK9(H4). The main polar lipids were identified as diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, hosphatidylglycerol, and phosphoglycolipid. The whole-cell sugars were glucose, ribose, and in minor amounts, mannose. The cell wall peptidoglycan contained LL-diaminopimelic acid. The draft genome has a size of 6.16 Mb, with a %G C C content of 71.4% and is predicted to contain at least 19 biosynthetic gene clusters encoding diverse secondary metabolites. Strain P38-E01T was found to inhibit the growth of the pathogenic yeast Candida albicans ATCC 90028 and a number of Gram-positive bacterial human and plant pathogens. Metabolites extracted from cultures of P38-E01T were analyzed by mass spectrometry, and it was found that the isolate produced the antifungal compound candicidin. Phenotypic and chemotaxonomic signatures, along with phylogenetic analyses, distinguished isolate P38-E01T from its closest neighbors; thus, this isolate represents a novel species of the genus Streptomyces for which the name Streptomyces tardus sp. nov.     Stabilnost amlodipin besilata i atenolola u jednoslojnim i dvoslojnim tabletama

    Multi-drug tablets of amlodipine besylate and atenolol were prepared as either mono-layer (mixed matrix) or bi-layer tablets containing each drug in a separate layer by using similar excipients and processing. Each tablet batch was packed in strip and blister packs and kept under accelerated temperature and humidity conditions. The stability of two tablet and packaging types was compared by HPLC analysis after 0, 1, 3 and 4.5 months and expressed as the content of intact amlodipine and atenolol. The content of atenolol did not decline regardless of tablet and packaging type. Amlodipine content in bi-layer tablets decreased to about 95 and 88% when packed in strips and blisters, respectively. When prepared as mono-layer tablets, the content decreased to 72 and 32%, respectively. The study revealed that the bi-layer tablet formulation was more stable than the mono-layer type. Further, the stability was increased when the tablets were packed in aluminium strips as compared to PVC blisters.Tablete s amlodipinom i atenololom pripremljene su ili u obliku jednoslojne tablete (miješani matriks) ili kao dvoslojne tablete (lijekovi u zasebnim slojevima) koristeći slične pomoćne tvari i uvjete tabletiranja. Stabilnost je određivana pomoću HPLC metode nakon 0, 1, 2, 3 i 4,5 mjeseci i izražena kao sadržaj intaktnog lijeka. Sadržaj atenolola nije se značajno promijenio bez obzira na tip tablete ili pakiranje. Sadržaj amlodipina u dvoslojnim tabletama smanjio se na 95 % (tablete u strip pakiranju) i 88 % (tablete u blister pakiranju). Istodobno, u jednoslojnom tipu kombiniranih tableta sadržaj se smanjio na 72 % (strip pakiranje) i 32 % (blister pakiranje). Rezultati pokazuju da su dvoslojne tablete s amlodipinom i atenololom stabilnije od jednoslojnih. Štoviše, pakiranje tableta u aluminijsku foliju u obliku strip pakiranja povećava njihovu stabilnost u usporedbi s PVC pakirnim materijalom (blister)
